GARETT'S 1999 TRIP TO WASHINGTON D.C.! ( PAGE 1 OF 2! )

As Geocities is shutting down and I'm trying to preserve a preexisting site, I've [hopefully] transferred all of the pics from this decade-old event to this new site, where it would only make sense for them to end up at. Since the images are from an older site, they are not up to par with the quality of more recent pages on here; that may change in the future, but I was more focused in preserving them, not improving them. I've tried to arrange them in the order they were on the initial site, including as many of the original photo descriptions as possible. Grayscale photos were shot in B&W. Enjoy!

Photographers: Garett Thomas, Danielle Belli, Mr. Mueller (video stills).

INTRODUCTION

This web site is an online scrapbook of Central Middle School's 8th Grade trip to D.C. from June 18th to 24th of 1999. Pictures, descriptions, etc. are posted here. See the pictures below, in a near-chronologically-accurate order of events/locations. The locations that lack pictures are not shown below, but are still documented in the list at the page's side.

DULLES AIRPORT

While not being a "main attraction" for this trip, this airport was the first place our feet stepped on the eastern coast. These pictures show some of the people who attended this trip.

Here we all are in the terminal, just out of the airplane. In these two pics, you can see Mrs. Mueller and [the backside of] Mr. Widener, the two teachers that organize this annual student trip. Danielle can be seen in the pic with Mrs. Mueller.

L-R: Garett and Josh. One of the rare times we were filmed, and it had to be in the airport!

In this pseudopanoramic set of images, we're in a large transport vehicle that took us to where we would pick up our baggage. From L-R, recognizable people include Chris, Mrs. Dresser, Shaina, Ryan, BJ and Melissa.

THE AWAKENING

After the airport, this was the very first place we visited -- even before breakfast! Straight from the airport, with everybody extremely tired, we visited "The Awakening". Everyone was extremely tired because our flight had left San Francisco at about 10 PM, and very few of us actually slept on the plane. The night of this day would be our first sleep in almost 36 hours!

In this panoramic morning photo, all of us, very tired, huddle toward the structures. I wish we had been awake enough to appreciate it more. If not for these photographs, I probably would have forgotten that we'd even visited these statues.

I'm glad that there aren't earthquakes in Washington. If this fell on you, it would hurt! As we would later discover, this was not the biggest object we would see on the trip.

Two Caitlins walk by in one shot that displays the Potomac in the background, and a hand is shown in the other image that was not captured in the panoramic one above.

MOUNT VERNON / POTOMAC RIVER

One of the very first places visited on our trip, Mount Vernon was the home of America's first president -- George Washington. Mount Vernon lies on the edge of the Potomac River. The estate consists of the large house, several gardens, Washington's grave, a dock, a horse farm, and several other elements.

This panoramic picture demonstrates why I decided not to actually tour Mount Vernon's insides.

Had I reached the end of the line, this is the building I would have toured. This photo shows the building's front.
This is the rear of Mount Vernon, overlooking the Potomac River.
Danielle took a picture of the Potomac River from the grass behind Mount Vernon.

Several gardens and stables, possibly even a ranch, resided on the property, with the Potomac in the distance.

Allie and Andi stand upon steps that read Love, Hope, Faith. The engraving behind them says:

IN MEMORY OF
THE AFRO AMERICANS
WHO SERVED AS SLAVES
AT MOUNT VERNON
THIS MONUMENT MARKING THIER
BURIAL GROUND
DEDICATED
SEPTEMBER 21, 1983
MOUNT VERNON
LADIES' ASSOCIATION

Our nation's first president is appropriately entombed at his place of residence.
This dock at Mount Vernon shows the boat we were all about to board.
No, this isn't a scene from Titanic. This was the wake trail left by our boat. Watching the wake was rather hypnotising; a video clip of this would be more interesting.

Trevor devours a snack. Picturesque, isn't it? Actually, the background is quite interesting, showing the kinds of vegetation that the area houses. Compared to California, where our school was from, this was quite different.
