PRODUCTION PHOTOS FROM ABRUPT AND SCENES FROM BEING JOHN MALKOVICH !

Here's a selection from the photos taken during the production of these two films, though that basically means all of them for ...Malkovich due to poor camera functionality and not many taken to begin with! For Abrupt, the full size of some of the shots taken by Julian Hatt were never received, so the small sizes of those was enlarged.

ABRUPT (2005)

Photographers: Don Danushka Jayakody, Julian Hatt, Maria P. Garcia, Stephanie Young, Garett Thomas.

In the very first filming date, during that semester's spring break, we filmed the portion that takes place immediately after the airplane but before the airport itself. The halls of the apartments resemble that quite well! L-R, from Leftmost to Rightmost photo: Lucas, Andrew, Garett, Garett, Ed, Maria, Lucas, Andrew, Evan.

By this point, the sun was going down over the North Quad, which made for some nice views inside.

Steph was the assistant director, and Kramer had two roles. His first, an airplane extra, was over, and his "more prominant" role was soon to come!

Evan was behaving. Steph was not...

No photos beyond these clothed versions were taken, but we had this scene pretty well blocked out. L-R: Andrew, Maura and Garett.

Jumping ahead to the last filming date, we were able to film "inside the airplane" by utilizing the backseat of Amber's van and bringing it to my room on the 3rd floor of one of the Residence Halls! That was pretty heavy, there was no elevator, and the metal on the bottom was somewhat of an issue... Nonetheless, we were successful! L-R: Amber, Evan and Pam.

And so the green screen was put up, and my room rearranged to fit everything. L-R: Pam, Garett, Evan and Ed.

Here, my $5 closet mirror is arranged with a reflective light to simulate ambient light from the supposed window.

Shhh, quiet! It's a prank on Amber!

Pam writes notes on a white board for Evan to follow, as the scenes is very time-specific.

We're filming at this point. Pam plays the stuardess, and the art tray shown was a prop for the pull-down tray on planes for food. Ed's character is reading The Poisonwood Bible, the novel my English course at CSUMB, taught by Lisa C. Watson, was reading at the time.

I played the soundtrack during the 17-second-long sequence so that every minute detail was covered.

Jumping time again! New filming date, this time in between the two shown thus far. Here, Don and I are in a San Carlos parking lot. It would represent SFO's, which I was not sure we'd have access to. We tried using a camera dolly, but the ground needed a smoother surface for it to be useful.

New location, but same big roadtrip filming date. Now we're at a nice looking neighborhood.

We used walkie talkies that day!

Don and Garett set up the camera from afar.

Evan outside.

Here, I film in the middle of the road! It was actually much busier of a road than I'd ever thought, and continually had to readjust my position so as to not get hit! Evan's car, actually Steph's car, known to us as "Veronica," is shown in the picture at right.

This is inside the car, which we set up for filming a single shot at motion.

We even had an overhead "aerial shot," which we were able to film from the top of a freeway overpass, fitting the camera through the fence. L-R: Evan, Garett and Don.

Onward to SFO, the place I was scared to film in that it would be quite the guerrilla experience. Evan's father, Julian, was a cop, so his accompaniment was a huge relief.

Filming at the baggage carousel. That's a wrap!

SCENES FROM BEING JOHN MALKOVICH (2006)

Photographers: Garett Thomas, Jim Thomas, Chris Anderson, Andrew Kramer.

Casting Assistant and Casting Associate, Maria P. Garcia and Alisa Lai, respectively.

Here's the start of auditions. Shown here is the 2nd, Akemi Maniwa. The first was Dana Bengtson, but the camera was faulty and the pic did not work.

123

Pics for 3 & 4 are shown together because they got the parts. Andrew Kramer plays Craig, and Lauren Patron plays Maxine.

This represents the entire first round of filming: maybe 10 minutes of damaged footage was in place of about an hour's worth at two locations. THAT'S the result of a damaged camera not being reported, then not fixed, and finally, given out for this to happen. Damn it!

123

The SECOND week had to be called off at the last minute by Chili's Restaurant, where we were to film, because of a new employment activity to be held in place there. My dad had come down for the weekend to help out anyway, so we explored with the camera at such places as this (beach in Carmel) and the Doughboy Theater (now demolished).

The THIRD week, we're finally filming! One of the few pics is of the cutboard, which obviously has some extra decorations...

123

Here are two pics at Chili's during the set up of filming there again. Remember, everything shown in the movie is from an entire redoing of the project. Even the bartender, Kathleena Ramirez, was an actress! I praise the actors for being willing to help out so much!
